This text offers a wide-ranging overview of the origins of Indian astronomy. Accessible to the layman, it brings into play a variety of early scriptures as well as archaeological evidence, and develops new perspectives in the field based on the author’s own research.

Dr. Subhash Kak is a professor of computer science at Oklahoma State University (USA), a historian of science and a well-known Indologist. This paper, reproduced with his permission, formed a chapter in Astronomy Across Cultures: The History of Non-Western Astronomy (ed. Helaine Selin, Kluwer, 2000).
