The author is a Raja Ramanna Fellow and teaches at the Dept. of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is also an Indologist with expertise in archaeoastronomy. This paper, presented at the ISERVE conference at Hyderabad in December 2007, throws new insights on the early developments of Indian astronomy, and is reproduced here with Prof. R. N.
