The Indian Oboe Reexamined

by Dr. Dileep Karanth

This paper examines the thesis that the Indian oboe—or shanai—is a medieval import from the Middle East. Drawing from Sanskrit and Persian texts, apart from other sources, Dr. Dileep Karanth, a lecturer at the department of Physics, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, establishes the indigenousness of this and other traditional musical instruments of India.
